How to delete ,remove or disable Thumbs.db files :[windows vista/7/8]

How to disable , delete or remove Thumbs.db files from folders:

First of all you need to know what are Thumbs.db file.
Let me make you clear that thumbs.db files are system file and not computer virus or malware.

what is the use of thumbs.db files?

Thumbs.db is an image cache which makes thumbnail viewing faster. These file are automatically created by system mainly in windows vista ,windows  7 and windows 8.They are usually hidden but can appear if you change the folder settings. And you might find it impossible to delete it sometimes.
If you see thumbs.db files everywhere inside folders then try the steps below to remove and hide it.

How to remove or delete thumbs.db files:

It is really difficult to browse every folder and delete each thumbs.db file individually .
so first try to find all the thumbs.db file and then collectively try to delete it. For this.....

  • Open 'my computer' .
  • At the top just below the toolbar  type thumbs.db in search box and press enter.
  • In a few minutes depending upon your hard disk size all the thumbs.db file will be show by the search.
  • press Ctrl+A to select all the thumbs.db files and then press Shift+Delete to delete all the thumbs.db file.

In my case you can see from the images that I was able to delete thumbs.db files.
But sometime windows show notification that 'The action cannot be completed because the file is open in windows explorer'
Next thing  you can do is that you either take the ownership of thumbs.db  file and then delete it or try to disable or hide it.

How to Disabling the viewing of thumbs.db files in windows:

  • At the top of the windows toolbar click on 'view'.
  • Click on ' option ' and then click on 'change folder and search option'.
